It is pretty possible, but you may need to allowlist (or safelist, or whitelist, depending on your vpn client) your local network, it your trying to access your rpi at home, just from another computer.
If you're trying to access it from elsewhere, I recommend Tailscale. Have been using it for quite some time and works like a charm, not only for SSH.
