There are two types of ethernet jacks. Those with built-in transformers and those without. The former have been specified for all ethernet equipped RPis.
In early 2012 it was reported that a batch, possibly the first production batch, had been assembled with the transformerless, but pin compatible version. I don't know if they were scrapped or reworked. Perhaps one of the old time RPi employees can say.
