Interfacing (DSI, CSI, I2C, etc.) • Alternative to wiring pi?

Forgive my ignorance, but it has been a few years since I had to interface the GPIO with anything. On previous projects I used wiringpi, which seems to be rather out of fashion, so my question is: Could someone recommend a similar package which is currently recommended? I want to programme using C on a RPI 3.
